How to Choose the Perfect Chew Toy for Your Pup

Not all chew toys are created equal. Here's how to match durability, size, and material to your dog's age, breed, and chewing style.

Chewing is natural for dogs — it relieves teething pain in puppies, cleans teeth in adults, and fights boredom across every life stage. The trick is picking a toy that survives your dog's chewing style without posing a safety risk.

For gentle chewers, soft plush or rubber squeaky toys work well. Look for reinforced seams and non-toxic fillings. These pups enjoy the texture more than the destruction.

Moderate chewers need tougher rubber or rope toys. Braided cotton rope helps floss teeth during tug sessions, while solid rubber bones withstand daily gnawing without splintering.

Power chewers are a different story. Skip anything they can tear apart and swallow. Choose extra-durable nylon or thick natural rubber rated for aggressive chewers, and always supervise the first few sessions.

Size matters — a toy should be too big to fit entirely in your dog's mouth. If they can swallow it, it's too small. When in doubt, go one size up.

Rotate chew toys every few days to keep interest high. A basket of three to four options feels like a fresh toy collection without constant spending. Your pup — and your shoes — will thank you.
